My first real job was fixing cars at Sears, about 25 years ago. My dad was a cabinet maker, so I grew up in a shop and have been building and repairing things ever since.
In my thirties I ran a contracting business in Dawson City, Yukon. We did snow removal, built driveways and took on municipal contracts. I ran skid steers, dump trucks and excavators, and worked on mine sites and a municipal sewer line install.
Then I opened two restaurants, both in spaces that had never been restaurants before. I managed the build-outs, the permits and a lot of plumbing. When you run a restaurant you learn to fix your own dishwasher and keep the grease trap working, because you can't afford a repair call every week.
After that I did building maintenance, first for a hotel and then for public housing at Yukon Housing. Earlier I'd been the contractor bidding on their jobs; there I saw it from the owner's side, which taught me what building managers need from the people they hire.
Now I'm on Texada, fixing what's broken in people's homes and buildings. I put my money into tools that make the work faster and safer, and I charge flat prices so the job costs the same however long it takes.
